Christa Butner: Sergeant at Arms
Christa Butner’s achievements extend far beyond her professional driving career. A dedicated advocate, leader, and role model, she has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to breaking barriers, uplifting communities, and creating opportunities for others.
Christa earned her bachelor’s degree with the firm belief that language has the power to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and expand access to meaningful employment. Throughout her career, she has embodied this belief, using communication as both a tool and a bridge to ensure that people from all walks of life can participate fully in society.
Her passion for service and accessibility has earned her well-deserved recognition. In 2017, Christa was honored as the Support Service Provider (SSP) of the Year by the North Carolina Deaf-Blind Associates (NCDBA). This award reflected her exceptional dedication to the deaf-blind community and her tireless efforts to ensure individuals received the communication support and access they deserved.
Building upon this foundation of service, Christa made history in 2018 when she became the first female in North Carolina to receive a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This remarkable milestone not only cemented her status as a trailblazer in the trucking industry but also demonstrated her determination to show that deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals are fully capable of excelling in demanding professions.
Understanding the importance of community, mentorship, and representation, Christa went on to establish the Deaf Female Truckers Facebook group, a supportive network where deaf women truckers, and those aspiring to join the industry, can find guidance, encouragement, and shared experience. Through this platform, she continues to advocate for deaf truckers, amplifying their voices and fostering an environment where members can thrive both personally and professionally.
Her advocacy reaches far beyond trucking. Christa dedicates her time to supporting deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deaf-blind individuals by sharing her knowledge of communication strategies, accessibility tools, and available resources. Whether through direct mentorship, community engagement, or volunteer service, she ensures that others are equipped with the tools they need to succeed on their own terms.
Christa’s story is one of perseverance, innovation, and dedication. By combining her love for trucking with a lifelong commitment to accessibility and equity, she demonstrates that deafness is not a limitation but a source of strength, resilience, and inspiration. Her accomplishments stand as a testament to what is possible when determination meets opportunity.
As the Sergeant at Arms within a nonprofit organization, Christa embodies the values of leadership, integrity, and service. She plays an essential role in maintaining order, supporting organizational procedures, and upholding the mission of the organization. Her work continues to inspire a new generation of drivers and advocates, proving that with skill, support, and courage, barriers can be dismantled and dreams can be achieved.
Through her remarkable journey, Christa Butner has become not only a pioneer in her profession but also a beacon of hope and empowerment for communities across the nation.
