DeafNation Live: Spotlight on Deaf Trucker David Helgerson
DeafNation Live recently featured a powerful episode titled “Deaf Trucker” hosted by veteran truck driver David Helgerson. Sponsored by ZVRS & Purple Communications, Sorenson, and Sprint Accessibility, the program highlighted the unique experiences and challenges faced by Deaf individuals in the trucking industry, while celebrating the achievements of those who have paved the way for accessibility in transportation.
David Helgerson, often known in the community as “Duke,” brought decades of lived experience to the conversation. With over 30 years on the road as a professional truck driver, Helgerson shared stories from life behind the wheel, offering insight into both the obstacles and the triumphs of working in a field where communication access is often limited. His perspective underscored the resilience of Deaf truckers, who rely on visual communication methods, technology, and community support to succeed in an industry that has historically overlooked their contributions.
Helgerson’s journey is deeply rooted in both education and advocacy. A graduate of Gallaudet University, with further training in diesel mechanics and CDL licensing from Western Technical College, he combined technical skill with a passion for driving. Since 2011, he has been an active member of Deaf Truckers United (DTU), a national nonprofit dedicated to empowering Deaf drivers, building community, and advocating for equal opportunities in trucking.
The episode offered viewers more than just an inside look at trucking—it provided inspiration. Helgerson emphasized the importance of persistence, community, and self-advocacy. For many Deaf individuals, trucking represents both independence and livelihood, and through his work with DTU, Helgerson continues to mentor and encourage the next generation of drivers.
By featuring Helgerson’s story, DeafNation Live reaffirmed its commitment to amplifying the voices of Deaf professionals across diverse fields. The program not only celebrated Helgerson’s decades-long career but also brought attention to the broader movement for accessibility, inclusion, and recognition within industries where Deaf workers remain underrepresented.
