FMCSA Meeting - DTU Admins Attended in DC 11/12/19
On November 12, 2019, administrators from Deaf Truckers United (DTU) traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend an important meeting with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This meeting was a significant step in DTU’s ongoing advocacy work, aimed at improving accessibility, fairness, and opportunity for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in the trucking industry.
The FMCSA, the federal agency responsible for regulating and providing safety oversight for commercial motor vehicles, plays a central role in determining policy, licensing standards, and physical qualification requirements for commercial drivers. For years, Deaf truckers have faced barriers such as the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) mandatory hearing standard, which historically limited career opportunities despite proven ability and safety records.
The 2019 meeting allowed DTU administrators to:
- Advocate for Equal Opportunity - Present real-world evidence showing that Deaf truck drivers can meet or exceed industry safety standards.
- Address the Hearing Standard - Discuss the hearing exemption process and highlight areas where the system could be improved for accessibility and fairness.
- Share Lived Experiences - Provide first-hand accounts of the challenges Deaf truckers face, from training to job placement, and how policy changes could remove unnecessary barriers.
- Strengthen Relationships - Build direct communication channels between the Deaf trucking community and federal regulators to ensure ongoing dialogue.
This meeting was not only about policy, it was also about representation. By having Deaf leaders present at the table, FMCSA officials heard directly from those most affected by regulations. The event demonstrated DTU’s commitment to engaging at the highest levels of government to protect the rights of Deaf drivers and to push for lasting change in the industry.
In short, the November 12, 2019 FMCSA meeting marked a milestone in DTU’s advocacy journey, reinforcing the organization’s mission to create a level playing field and ensure that Deaf truckers are recognized for their skills, professionalism, and contributions to America’s highways.
