Jerry D. Jones: Breaking Barriers for Deaf Truckers

Jerry D. Jones, a trailblazer in the trucking industry, is widely recognized as one of the first deaf commercial drivers to break through longstanding barriers in the profession. He gained national attention for his pioneering achievement as the first deaf driver hired by Covenant Transport, a milestone that was celebrated in the company’s own newsletter.

Jones’s professional journey reflects both determination and adaptability. After his groundbreaking role at Covenant Transport, he went on to work for Reynolds Nationwide, where he specialized in hauling dairy tankers. Throughout his career, Jerry encountered challenges unique to deaf drivers, such as difficulty with sound-based communication tools including phone calls and weigh station intercom systems. However, he overcame these obstacles with resourceful solutions: using Qualcomm systems to stay in contact with dispatchers, relying on Video Relay Services (VRS) in emergencies, and utilizing EZ Pass lights at weigh stations. When interacting with shippers and receivers, he often displayed necessary information directly on his phone to ensure smooth communication.

Jerry’s training was another notable chapter in his story. Under the instruction of Don Olds, he successfully completed CDL training, a success story that has since been cited as an inspiration for other deaf individuals pursuing commercial driving careers.

His legacy extends beyond his personal achievements. Organizations such as the Legacy of Deaf Truckers Foundation continue to draw attention to the challenges and opportunities faced by deaf drivers, advocating for greater inclusion and awareness within the trucking industry. Jerry Jones’s career remains a testament to perseverance, innovation, and the belief that hearing status should never limit one’s ability to excel in the profession.
