Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) 2018

The Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) 2018 took place from March 22 to 24 at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville, Kentucky. This major trucking industry event attracted approximately 75,000 attendees and featured over 1,000 exhibitors, making it one of the largest heavy-duty trucking shows in North America.

One of the standout moments was Peterbilt’s celebration of producing its 1-millionth truck, a specially customized Model 567 Heritage, which was awarded to a dedicated Peterbilt SuperFan during the event. Mack Trucks also made a significant impression by unveiling its new Anthem on-highway model, showcasing advancements in truck design and performance.

The show reflected the growing importance of technology within the trucking industry, as numerous tech companies such as Uber Freight, Garmin, Fleetio, and others participated with booths and demonstrations. Seminars were held covering crucial topics

including compliance with the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate, strategies for business growth, and advice for owner-operators navigating the challenges of the industry.

Entertainment was a lively component of MATS 2018, highlighted by a free concert featuring country music star Kellie Pickler, which drew enthusiastic crowds and added a festive atmosphere to the event.

Adding to the show’s visual appeal was the Paul K. Young Truck Beauty Championship, which showcased an impressive variety of custom trucks, including highly detailed rigs,

“rat rods”, creatively styled vintage trucks with a rough-around-the-edges aesthetic, and historic vehicles from earlier trucking eras. This competition celebrated the artistry and craftsmanship that truck owners put into their vehicles.

Interestingly, the event was marked by unusual weather, as an unexpected snowfall of about seven inches blanketed Louisville during the show. Attendees and exhibitors worked diligently to keep their trucks clean and pristine despite the snow, which created a memorable and unique challenge for the event’s participants.

Overall, MATS 2018 combined industry innovation, education, entertainment, and camaraderie, making it a memorable gathering for trucking professionals and enthusiasts alike.
