Morris Townsend, Sr. was a trailblazer and a respected figure in both the Deaf and trucking communities. He made history as the first Deaf man to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in the state of North Carolina, breaking barriers and paving the way for others to follow. His leadership extended to serving as President of Deaf Truckers United (DTU), where he worked tirelessly to advocate for the rights, inclusion, and representation of Deaf drivers nationwide.

With a career spanning more than 35 years as a tow truck driver, Morris demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and professionalism. He later brought his expertise to Kernersville Dodge/TMAir, where he served as a CDL driver, continuing to contribute to the transportation industry with pride and commitment.


Beyond his professional accomplishments, Morris was known for his deep compassion and unwavering support for the Deaf community. He cared deeply for its members,

offering guidance, encouragement, and advocacy to those navigating the challenges of both life and career. His legacy is one of perseverance, leadership, and service to others.


In loving memory of a remarkable man, Morris Townsend, Sr., April 9, 1961 - January 31, 2022. His impact lives on in the countless lives he touched and the doors he helped open for future generations.
