Social Media Coordinator: Sandy Sloat
My name is Sandy Sloat, and I am honored to serve as a Social Media Coordinator and Administrator with Deaf Truckers United (DTU). I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself, share a bit about my journey, and let our members know that I am here to support you.
I am completely deaf and a proud graduate of the Truck Driving Academy at Amarillo College, where I became the first deaf female and the second deaf student overall to complete the program. I graduated with strong academic performance and a deep appreciation for the skills, discipline, and responsibility that professional truck driving requires. Trucking has given me independence, purpose, and the opportunity to continue learning in a hands-on environment.
Before entering the trucking industry, I earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Gallaudet University. I also explored welding and other skilled trades, as I have always enjoyed building, repairing, and working with my hands. That background has shaped who I am today and has helped me understand the value of technical skills, safety, and adaptability, qualities that are essential in trucking and in life.
Like many members of DTU, I have experienced barriers related to communication access, disability misconceptions, and working in industries that are traditionally male-dominated. Those experiences strengthened my determination and reinforced my belief that deaf individuals especially deaf women are fully capable of succeeding when given access, opportunity, and support. These values are what drew me to Deaf Truckers United and continue to motivate my involvement.
In my role as Social Media Coordinator, I work to ensure our members are informed, represented, and connected. I help share updates, member stories, and relevant information while maintaining a respectful and inclusive online presence. As an administrator, I am also here to listen, assist when possible, and support DTU members as part of a growing and united community. My goal is to help create a space where deaf truckers feel seen, heard, and valued.
Outside of trucking, I have a background in long-distance running and athletics, including representing the United States at the Deaflympics. That experience taught me perseverance, teamwork, and the importance of strong community support, lessons I carry with me into my work with DTU.
Deaf Truckers United exists to uplift, advocate, and bring together deaf professionals in the trucking industry. I am proud to be part of this mission and grateful for the opportunity to serve our members. If you have questions, ideas, concerns, or simply want to connect, please know that I am here and happy to help.
Thank you for being part of Deaf Truckers United. I look forward to supporting you and growing together as a strong, respectful, and empowered community.
